On Tuesday, several military soldiers proceeded to assault Ashaiman locals after a soldier was killed nearby.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said during a discussion of President Akufo-State Addo’s of the Nation Address that the President ought to have shown sympathy to the families of the slain officer and the innocent people who were brutalized by the military.
“As Commander in Chief of the GAF, he should have first of all commiserated with the family and the GAF over the loss of the solider. But the President did not say a word. He didn’t think that he should condemn the brutality and assure that there will be a committee to probe the killing and the high-handedness meted out to the residents, and he is the Commander in Chief of the GAF?”
There is growing pressure on President Akufo-Addo to take action against the Ashaiman military misdeeds.
Many believe that the President, who serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, would make a public remark on the matter.
Amnesty International, a non-governmental organization that promotes human rights, asserts that the President had an opportunity to address the matter at his state of the nation speech but chose not to do so.
The military has been asked by the former president John Dramani Mahama to desist from executing extrajudicial justice against them, stressing that many residents and employees of Ashaiman are innocent of this horrible crime.
He also counseled the military to display caution and let the legal system take its course.
According to him, the government must intervene to resolve the dispute between Ashaiman locals and GAF while pursuing financial restitution for all impacted parties.
