On March 8, 2023, Mr. Mahama posted on his Facebook page, denouncing the horrible murder of Trooper Imoro Sherrif, a young military officer who was allegedly stabbed in the town on March 4, 2023, and offering his sympathies to the grieving family.
“I am deeply saddened by the death of one of our soldiers, at such a young age, in Ashaiman. His bereft and mourning family, as well as the officers and members of the Ghana Armed Forces, are all recipients of Lordina and my sincere sympathies. I do understand how such unanticipated fatalities effect the Force, as your previous Commander in Chief,” he said on Facebook.
The invasion of the Ashaiman village and the brutality that was meted out to them were subsequently condemned by him, noting that many of them could be innocent bystanders who were unaware of the soldier’s death.
“There are obviously many people who live and work in Ashaiman who are innocent of this heinous crime. The military must, therefore, refrain from meting out extra-judicial justice to them. ”In order to calm the situation and subsequently offer “commensurate recompense for all those impacted,” he demanded prompt action from the government and state institutions.
Troops stormed the houses of Ashaiman residents on Tuesday, after a statewide severe downpour that flooded areas of Accra and claimed some lives.
Soldiers perpetrated savage attacks on the people while flying military helicopters over the region in search of the murderers of a young military officer, Trooper Imoro Sherrif, who was reportedly stabbed in the town on Saturday, March 4, 2023.
Analysts have condemned the operation, stating that while the killing of the soldier was brutal, only the police have the legal authority to conduct such drills, not the military.
However, 150 of the 184 persons detained by the army have been freed.
