For the program to be effective, he pleaded with Ghanaians. Ahiagbah stated on Twitter”Let’s support the government and disregard the NDC, who have chosen to play games with the emotions of retirees. NDC lacks solutions.”
The ongoing debt exchange scheme has exempted individual pension bond holders who did not offer their bonds, according to Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
He said that the arrangement with the disgruntled pensioners was struck on Wednesday and was detailed in a letter he sent to them.
Notwithstanding the minister’s insistence that they were allowed to self-exempt themselves from the program, the seniors have been picketing outside the Finance Ministry for the past two weeks demanding that he exclude them from the exercise.
In a briefing to Parliament, Ofori-Atta refuted claims that the government was attempting to use the program to siphon money intended for seniors.
In addition, he disclosed that the scheme has successfully switched GH 82,994,510,128 in old bonds out of a possible GH 97,749,624,691 under it. This, according to him, shows a success rate of 84.91 percent, surpassing the desired goal of an 80 percent participation rate.
