The founder of Engineers and Planners had previously volunteered to help Leonard finish his medical training and pay for his study overseas.Rafik Mahama, an assistant to Ibrahim Mahama, wrote on Facebook that Leonard had arrived and was undergoing a procedure at a hospital. Mahama also stated that he had given the go-ahead for Leonard to have treatment in South Africa.

He said “Arrangements have been done in South Africa for him to receive special care and treatment. Processes have started for him to be flown to South Africa.”

Leonard attended and graduated from Ganaa Memorial Junior High School, where he excelled with an overall grade point average of 8.

He pursued General Science as a course at St. Francis Xavier Senior High School to continue his studies.

Due to his open aspiration to practice medicine, he was given the name “Dr. Ningwie Leonard Lanyeli.”

He worked hard to achieve this goal in 2007, earning six As on his WASSCE examinations and B2, B3, and B2s in biology, English, and social studies, respectively.

He told JoyNews that “I gained admission to read medicine at the University of Cape Coast at the cost of GH¢4,100 a year and my father was a teacher who couldn’t afford to pay the fees, so I opted to read optometry at KNUST.

One of his senior schoolmates of Leonard, Emmanuel Belig, now a Pharmacist at the Wa regional Medical stores said “Back at St. Francis Xavier Minor Seminary, he [Leonard] used to say there must be a ‘Dr’ attached to his name. So we called him ‘Dr’.

Leonard said during his first four years at KNUST, he performed well until he had mental health issues.

His 60-year-old mother, Ninwie Gladys said one of Leonard’s university friends took him to his home town and he returned with the condition.

She stated that “I had a hint that a friend at the university took Leo to his home town and he came back with this condition. “Leonard said that in 2013, he was compelled to stop his university studies in order to receive treatment at the Pantang Psychiatric Hospital, and that the hospital’s medical staff later identified him as having bipolar disorder.

“There is a certificate hanging in that empty room that attests to the fact that I am still the spelling contest champion from Pantang Hospital from when I participated during my stay there for medical care. I make the claim that I am sane and can instruct a crowd “Narrating was Leonard.

He mentioned that he later went back to the institution in 2014 and was doing well, although his time there was just temporary.

Leonard’s father, according to Ninwie Gladys, passed away on August 13th 2011

Situs Bayaa, a former biology teacher at St. Francis Xavier Junior Seminary, said that he was clever and may have become one of Ghana’s top scientists or doctors if he hadn’t had the illness.

However, Leonard declared that if given the chance, he would return to school “To be able to assist my coworkers, I just need a basic course in community health nursing or teachers training college. I truly know how to assist.”
